Calligraphy means “beautiful writing” and refers to hand lettering done with a special pen. I sometimes combine calligraphy with Photoshop lettering to create logos or monograms such as the logo at the top of this page.
While computer lettering is very legible, calligraphy adds an eye-catching element that cannot be duplicated by the computer. I also sometimes use calligraphic illumination, the practice of drawing designs or pictures in or around the letters. Here is my full first name in calligraphy with illumination, Photoshop lettering and a special effects filter.

Before there were personal computers and fonts, certificates, signs and other documents were hand lettered. I freelanced in calligraphy and taught adults how to do it at Conestoga College and the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada in the 1970’s.
